BRUNSWICK, Md., Nov. 26, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The City of Brunswick and Brunswick Main Street were awarded grants as part of Governor Larry Hogan's Fiscal Year 2020 neighborhood revitalization program awards on Nov. 21, 2019. The five revitalization programs are managed by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.
The City of Brunswick received $400,000 from the Strategic Demolition fund for the Downtown Brunswick Building Acquisition project. The grant is aimed to "implement an acquisition program for blighted and underused properties in the downtown area." The city plans to release further details on this in the coming months. "It is very encouraging to see the state supporting local economic development," says City of Brunswick Mayor Jeffrey T. Snoots. "This grant is a key component in helping the city reach its full potential."
Brunswick Main Street was awarded $55,000 from the Community Legacy Program toward their Façade and Interior Improvement Program and $200,000 toward the installation of a sprinkler system in Cannon's Events, a historically significant event space. With the total cost amounting to approximately $250,000, the remaining $50,000 will be put up by Dave Blackmon, owner of Smoketown Brewing Station, and the City of Brunswick's Economic Development Commission Connection Fee program. "Both of these grants fill significant needs," says Brunswick Main Street manager Sophie Smith. "Each grant is helping us accelerate the process of revitalizing Brunswick."
The City of Brunswick and Brunswick Main Street join nearly 200 other Maryland cities, counties and organizations as the recipients of over $600 million in grants.
