ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) has named the Public Works Department of the City of Riviera Beach and the Engineering Team of Erdman Anthony in West Palm Beach as the recipients of the 2020 Sustainable Practices Recognition Award.
The award recognized the City's choice of concrete as a sustainable solution to help address flooding issues in the low-lying intracoastal neighborhood of Yacht Harbor Manor located on Singer Island. The roads were reconstructed with a 2% slope for improved drainage and repaved with concrete to better withstand inundation from king tides, tropical storms and hurricanes.
"By going with concrete, we were able to raise the infrastructure out of the brackish water, not only extending the road life but also the water and sewer infrastructure as well," said Terence Bailey, Public Works Director for the City of Riviera Beach. "Additionally, not having to go back into the neighborhood to do road maintenance also made concrete a very attractive choice."
The award also recognizes the City's use of concrete as a model for other civic leaders and a representation for the progress in the thoughtful, proactive construction of a more resilient and sustainable infrastructure.
The Sustainable Practices Recognition Award is part of the ACPA's 2020 Association Awards and is awarded to an organization or team (owner and contractor) that demonstrates leadership by implementing design and construction practices that consider societal, environmental and economic factors.
In Florida, the ACPA partners with the Florida Concrete & Products Association (FC&PA) to promote the benefits of concrete paving for streets, highways and parking lots. For more information visit http://www.fcpa.org.
