ANSI Z535 is the primary standards-making committee for safety communication in the United States. The ANSI Z535 committee and its subcommittees write standards that govern the characteristics of visual safety markings that are used to warn about hazards and prevent accidents – including safety labels and safety signs. The ANSI Z535 family of six standards covers the formatting, colors and symbols used for safety signs, labels, tags and markings and how safety information is presented in instruction manuals.
ANSI Z535.1 Safety Colors is an important foundational standard as it provides a system for specifying safety colors that are used in the full series of ANSI Z535 standards, from ANSI Z535.2 to ANSI Z535.6. After all, according to the standard itself, "Safety colors are often used to supplement a word message or safety symbol. The standardization of safety colors assists with the efficient development of safety information as well as assisting viewers in recognizing information as being related to safety." ANSI Z535.1 addresses the technical definitions, color standards and color tolerances for safety colors.

Clarion Safety has a long-standing history of leadership of ANSI Z535, including Peckham's role as chair of the ANSI Z535 committee from 2012 to this past month, when he and vice-chair Paul Frantz stepped down to let others take on these two primary roles.
In June, several other subcommittee leadership positions were appointed, including those for ANSI Z535.4 and ANSI Z535.6.
This is an important year for standards writing in the United States. The ANSI Z535 standards are due to be republished at the end of 2021. In the coming months, each standard's subcommittee, and the committee as a whole, will take on the challenge of defining and refining the best practices related to communicating safety so that people are better protected from harm.
The process to identify and propose any needed changes to ANSI Z535.1 is already underway. Change proposals are now being received by Lambert, who is then responsible for addressing the proposal, facilitating ANSI's process for determining whether the change is incorporated in the standard.
