Expert faculty Dr. Mark Gold and Dr. Siegfried Schmidt highlight the complexities of chronic pain and best management strategies for the primary care setting and share ways PCPs and patients can employ shared decision-making to manage pain.

CME Outfitters (CMEO), a leading accredited provider of continuing medical education, is excited to announce a new CME Snack, Managing the Complexity of Chronic Pain in the Primary Care Setting, featuring expert faculty members Mark S. Gold, MD, and Siegfried O. F. Schmidt, MD, PhD, FAAFP. This 20-minute online activity is part of a CME Outfitters and USF Health nationwide educational initiative to combat inappropriate use of opioids in the management of acute and chronic pain. The project, Addressing the Opioid Epidemic: A Call to Action to Save Our Communities, is supported by an educational grant from Johnson & Johnson.

Primary care physicians (PCPs) have the opportunity to make a difference in the opioid epidemic, as they are responsible for approximately 50% of opioid prescriptions. PCPs are well suited to manage chronic pain as they are adept at managing chronic disease and associated comorbidities, coordinating care, and applying a biopsychosocial approach to multimodal pain management. Incorporating best practice strategies for the evaluation of pain, integration of risk assessment tools, and ongoing patient education and monitoring will optimize safe and responsible prescribing.

In this free CME Snack, Dr. Gold Dr. Schmidt focus on the complexity of chronic pain and how best to manage it in the primary care setting and discuss how PCPs and their patients can work together to make informed decisions about their pain management plan.
