In full release this Independence Day, July 4, 2021, Jason Voiovich’s new book, Marketer in Chief: How Each President Sold the American Idea, recasts the president as the chief evangelist of the American idea, much in the same way Henry Ford shaped the development of the automobile, or Steve Jobs introduced the world to the smartphone.

“Most presidential histories focus on a president’s accomplishments, political maneuvering, or policy positions,” says Voiovich. “But the president has very little direct control over any of those things. Reexamining the historical record shows what truly makes the president effective (or not) is their personality, persuasive skill, and stage presence.”

Marketing and product development veteran Voiovich is an expert in how consumers make decisions. Contrary to popular belief, people don’t buy a product because it has the “best features;” they choose it because it meets an emotional need and then justify that decision with tangible product attributes after the fact. For example: An iPhone makes people feel smart; MAC Cosmetics make people feel beautiful; or a Ford F-150 makes people feel tough. The strength of these brands frustrates competitors who (often) offer a technologically superior product.

In his book, Voiovich applies the same test to the stories of each of the 45 former presidents: How did they make Americans feel? The answer to that question led to surprising answers. The most intriguing stories include Calvin Coolidge – the first president to be “packaged” and “branded” like a consumer product, Harry Truman – the president that challenged the conventional wisdom that politicians must lie to succeed, and James Polk – the most important (and ruthless) president most people have never heard of.

In its Epilogue, the book offers advice to President Joe Biden on how to handle the extreme disruption in society and culture as if America was a tired brand in need of an overhaul.

In a career that spans more than 25 years, Jason Voiovich has launched hundreds of new products – everything from medical devices, to virtual healthcare systems, to non-dairy consumer cheese, to next-generation alternatives to the dreaded “cone of shame” for pets, to sex aides for cows (really!). He’s a graduate of both the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota, and he has completed post-graduate studies at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
