Cotton Incorporated teams with RFA as an advisory member to engage consumers about the importance of proper flushing habits of wipes products
SEATTLE, Wash., June 14, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Responsible Flushing Alliance (RFA) is excited to welcome Cotton Incorporated to its coalition of wipes manufacturers, wastewater treatment groups, and public health advocates working to educate consumers about proper flushing habits across the U.S.
Since 1970, Cotton Incorporated has been a leader in promoting cotton as the premium choice for apparel, home, and nonwoven products providing research and sustainable solutions to the industry. Through their research, they help encourage the use and desirability of cotton in ways that benefit every part of the supply chain.
"Cotton Incorporated is a key industry player and RFA is thrilled to welcome them as an advisory member," said RFA President Lara Wyss. "As an advisory member, Cotton Incorporated will play a critical role in amplifying our mission to educate consumers on the importance of responsible flushing. Their innovative approach to wipes research will also provide an important perspective to the use of cotton in wipes products."
"Cotton Incorporated is pleased to join the Responsible Flushing Alliance," said Meghan Holliday, associate director for nonwovens marketing at Cotton Incorporated. "As a leading research and marketing not-for-profit organization for all things cotton, we recognize the importance of the market for flushable and disposable wipe products. Cotton, a leading natural and biodegradable ingredient in these products, offers consumers a great, natural option. However, we still need to educate consumers about how to properly dispose of products. This is where the RFA plays a vital role in educating consumers."
Cotton Incorporated joins other advisory members including the California Association of Sanitation Agencies (CASA), the Center for Baby & Adult Hygiene Products (BAHP), H20 Global News, the National Stewardship Action Council (NSAC), the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA), and the Toilet Board Coalition.
RFA first launched its #FlushSmart campaign in California to spread awareness of the "Do Not Flush" symbol as it began appearing on wipes packaging last summer. RFA invites companies in the nonwovens industry, wastewater groups, or nonprofits related to water quality, sanitation, or personal care products to get in touch to learn more about opportunities to support the effort. For more information on the #FlushSmart campaign, please visit http://www.flushsmart.org, follow @flushsmart on Twitter and Facebook or follow Responsible Flushing Alliance on LinkedIn.
In July 2022, California's Wet Wipes Labeling Law began mandating the inclusion of the "Do Not Flush" symbol on all packaging of non-flushable wipes. The law also mandates that the wipes industry conducts a consumer education effort to draw attention to the symbol and help consumers understand what products are designed to not be flushed. Washington, Oregon, Illinois, and Colorado also have similar labeling laws in place requiring the "Do Not Flush" symbol.
Many in the wipes industry, after implementing the symbol on product packaging, joined RFA to help launch the #FlushSmart campaign. RFA's advisory members bolster the consumer education campaign by providing resources and research to support responsible flushing hygiene habits. Together, RFA and its members work to change flushing habits across the nation.
