COVID-19 is no match for Friends of the California State Fair's commitment to supporting education
Each year, the organization awards nearly $50,000 in scholarships to California students pursuing post-secondary education
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 2, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Friends of the California State Fair Scholarship Program for the 2021-22 academic year is now open and accepting applications until March 2, 2021.
Now it its 27th year, the program offers $1,000 to $2,500 scholarships to help twenty-five well-rounded and high achieving college students and graduating high school seniors pursue post-secondary education in a variety of academic disciplines.
The scholarship program was established as a collaboration between the Friends of the California State Fair, the California Exposition and State Fair (Cal Expo), the California State Fair Agricultural Advisory Council, the Ironstone Concours Foundation and Blue Diamond Growers.
Cal Expo was forced to cancel many of its events this year, including the 2020 State Fair and Food Festival and California State Fair Gala, which primarily fund the scholarship program through sponsorship and ticket sales. Jennifer Rousseve, Friends of the California State Fair Scholarship Liaison, said her organization is especially proud to be able to offer the scholarship program considering the impact the pandemic and wildfires have had on California residents.
Scholarships are available in 12 categories, including academic achievement, agriculture, art, business, culinary/hospitality management/event planning, trade school, and viticulture/enology. Top scholarship winners in select categories may be invited to compete for the $5,000 Ironstone Concours Foundation/Friends of the California State Fair Scholarship.
Applicants apply for one scholarship category of their choice per year and are evaluated based on academic excellence, leadership potential, civic accomplishments, recommendations and personal commitment to continuing their education. Through a personal essay, applicants must also address their involvement in school, community and volunteer activities as well as share the inspiration behind their chosen career path.
