CPMC Liver, Kidney Transplant Programs Earn Recognition from SRTR
SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB) April 17, 2014 -- Sutter Health affiliate California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) has been identified as the nation’s only hospital with both kidney and liver transplant programs that have higher-than-expected one- and three-year adult patient survivals that are statistically better-than-expected.
That is according to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), which released the data in its 2014 Annual Data Report. The term “higher-than-expected” refers to adjustments for various patient risk factors that help registry experts measure outcomes equally to create the ranking.
“Our standing in the SRTR report is a tribute to the talent and hard work of our transplant team, as well as all the staff and physicians who care for our transplant patients,” said CPMC CEO Warren Browner, MD, MPH. “Since our first kidney transplant in 1969, patients have come to CPMC because they are confident that their care is the finest in the nation.”
CPMC conducts approximately 70 liver and 200 kidney transplants per year. At CPMC, 97.4 percent of liver patients survived one year after transplant, compared to the expected 89.3 percent. CPMC also saw 98.4 percent of kidney patients survive one year after transplant, compared to the expected 96.6 percent.
“The CPMC transplant program is unique in that we have an expanded network of care to a broader community of patients through 14 care centers across Northern California and Nevada,” said Robert W. Osorio, MD, FACS, chairman of the CPMC Department of Transplantation. “These care centers, staffed by CPMC nurse coordinators and physicians, allow for pre- and post-transplant care for patients in their community. CPMC Transplant Center physicians travel to these care centers to see the patients in their communities, allowing patients to spend more time at their homes rather than traveling to specialists in San Francisco.”
By strategically locating care centers in the communities across Northern California and Nevada, CPMC provides greater access to patient services, such as transplant evaluation, transplant re-evaluation and post-transplant follow-up. All transplant surgeries are performed at CPMC in San Francisco.
The concept of bringing the expertise to the community is a cornerstone of the CPMC transplant program, which involves a large team of experts, including physicians, surgeons, nurses, social workers, physician assistants and financial coordinators. Through the community care centers, CPMC is able to provide the full spectrum of care for the patient.
For kidney transplantation, SRTR data placed CPMC with Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Indiana University Health in Indianapolis, Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, and University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle as having higher-than-expected survival rates. For liver transplantation, SRTR data recognized CPMC with Mayo Medical Center in Phoenix and University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville as higher than expected.
SRTR is an organization that supports ongoing evaluation of organ transplantation in the United States and publishes data for Transplant Center Programs around the nation.
