We’re proud to invest in our customers with initial and ongoing training. Not only do we succeed when they succeed, but we’re also strengthening independent coffee shops as an industry.

Crimson Cup Coffee & Tea, a nationally recognized coffee roaster and coffee shop franchise alternative, expanded its training prowess in 2018. Specialty coffee consultants worked directly with more than 100 baristas and managers to hone their drink preparation and management skills. Hands-on training took place at local coffee shops and at the Crimson Cup Innovation Lab in Columbus – the only Premier Training Campus in Ohio certified by the Specialty Coffee Association.

“I’m excited at the strides we’ve made in expanding our training mission,” said Founder and President Greg Ubert. “We’re proud to invest in our customers with initial and ongoing training. Not only do we succeed when they succeed, but we’re also strengthening independent coffee shops as an industry.”

Through its 7 Steps to Success coffee shop franchise alternative program, Crimson Cup trained owners, managers and baristas as they prepared to open 19 new independent coffee shops across the country. The program is based on Ubert’s book, Seven Steps to Success in the Specialty Coffee Industry.

“Our 7 Steps program delivers everything an entrepreneur needs to open a coffee shop,” Ubert said. “We offer personalized coffee business education, coffee shop operations training and hands-on barista training. Our 7 Steps trainers travel to each new coffee shop and remain on site through opening day to ensure a successful start.”

The roaster also provided more than $46,000 in loyalty training credits to existing coffee shop customers based on 2017 sales. This funded ongoing training for baristas and other staff at 16 independent coffee houses.

Coffee house customers can choose from 12 training classes covering nearly every aspect of coffee shop operations. Topics range from Espresso Machine Maintenance to Brew Bar Practices and Comparative Cupping Techniques.

For 2019, Crimson Cup plans to introduce an enhanced menu of course offerings with SCA-certified instructors.

"As the only Premier Training Campus in Ohio, the Innovation Lab offers a calibrated teaching environment to teach within SCA standards and protocols," Ubert said. “We look forward to welcoming baristas and other specialty coffee professionals from throughout the region to our state-of-the-art training facility.”

Crimson Cup also offers home coffee brewing and roasting classes for Columbus coffee lovers at the Innovation Lab. Current offerings include Coffee Brewing Basics, Espresso at Home, Roasting Fundamentals and Coffee Education … Seed to Cup.
