According to Sullivan, "I was born at Boston City Hospital and was raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts. I enlisted at the age of seventeen into the Marine Corps and was active from 1964 to 1968. After leaving the Corps, I went to work with ATT Long Lines in Boston, where I worked as a central office technician. I retired from the phone company in 2001 after thirty-two years. Me and my wife have been married for the past forty-eight years. We have resided in Brockton, Massachusetts, for the past forty-three years. We have two daughters and eight grandchildren."
