DALLAS, Sept. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Dallas attorney, Kay Van Wey is featured in a new podcast, Dr. Death by Wondery, which puts a spotlight on a deadly Dallas neurosurgeon, Christopher Duntsch. Dr. Duntsch seriously injured more than 30 patients and killed two over the course of a few years at multiple Dallas area hospitals.
Van Wey, a board certified Texas personal injury and medical malpractice attorney is featured in multiple episodes of the podcast. She represented more than a dozen victims of Dr. Duntsch, a.k.a. Dr. Death, in the Dallas area.
The heart of this story goes beyond one dangerous neurosurgeon. It highlights problems within the medical system and laws that are designed to protect the public, and in this case failed at every turn.
"Christopher Duntsch has lost his license to practice medicine in the state of Texas, and is currently serving a life sentence in prison -- which is unprecedented," said Kay Van Wey, founder of Van Wey Law, PLLC. "But my concern goes beyond this one bad surgeon. The system that failed to protect patients in the cases involving Dr. Duntsch continues to fail the public. The primary problem with the current system is that although hospitals have a legal obligation to report dangerous doctors to the National Practitioner Data Bank, they often don't. And by keeping silent they are violating federal law designed to prevent bad doctors from moving from state to state or hospital to hospital without detection. Too often hospitals are choosing to protect themselves and their doctors over patients. A secondary problem is that the data bank is not available to the public, so patients can't do their own research.
Patients must rely on hospitals following the law and putting patient safety first.
Kay Van Wey is a patient safety advocate and a subject matter expert on the laws and workings of a medical system that is failing to protect the public from bad doctors.
