SAN DIEGO, Dec. 03, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On December 7, 2018, nationally recognized CPA and tax attorney David Klasing will offer a presentation with the San Diego Tax Institute at the Handlery Hotel & Resort in San Diego. The session will take place at 3:50 PM and will feature a discussion about State Sales Tax Issues, with an Update on the Wayfair case.
The Wayfair case, or South Dakota vs. Wayfair Inc., which was heard by the Supreme Court in July of 2018, has been a pivotal case for the application of state sales taxes on virtual or online businesses. Before the case was heard, internet sellers collected a state's sales tax from buyers only if the company had property or employees in a state. With the new ruling, states are allowed to collect sales tax from businesses without employees operating within their state lines. Klasing plans to discuss the relevance of the case on California businesses that must now adhere to the new laws.
The San Diego Tax Institute, in association with CalCPA, is a conference bringing together tax experts and lawyers from throughout California. 2018 marks the twenty-first year of the conference, and this year, presenters' topics will range from California tax changes to international tax updates. In addition to Klasing's panel on the Wayfair case, David Flamer will speak about considerations for those with cannabis clients. Each conference session will provide in-depth information about legislation and regulations, showing participants the biggest and most significant changes in taxation in 2018.
"The Wayfair case has opened the door for states to require remote sellers to use a state's taxes, which has far-reaching effects across the country," says David Klasing, A dually licensed tax attorney and CPA. "The presentation will break down those changes specific to California and explore the possible uses of the court's decision on companies, corporations, and citizens in the future."
