New book tells a story about people and human nature, those who believed in a Divine Providence and by serving others, were humbled and exalted in equal measure
CLEVEDON, England, Feb. 16, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- David W Shopland announces his entry into the publishing scene with the release of "Sawdust and Splinters: There be Money in them Trees" (published by Trafford Publishing), a true story of a family's business struggles of over 200 years as they try to succeed and survive in a rapidly changing world.
This is the story of the Shopland family who were typical of their time and class, believed in a Divine Providence and that by serving others, they would be humbled and exalted in equal measure; namely people who had expected very little of "life's goods" but got on and did the tasks that were put before them. Grumbled all of the way and had lots of fun establishing a business in a developing small town during one of England's most exciting and turbulent times, when persecution, opposition and adversity were surmounted against a background of international conflict and social reform which shaped the British nation's future.
This book is not intended to be an exhaustive and detailed history of the homegrown English timber trade. It has only been written in answer to requests to record the history of E H Shopland & Sons Clevedon Sawmills and create a foundation on which further research could be based, in order to gain a true picture of how Shopland's Sawmill has grown and fitted into Clevedon's ongoing development.
"It is a record of several determined men, at a particular moment in time, doing the best that they could in difficult and changing circumstances with few ready financial resources at hand and gives a little insight into the thinking behind their actions. Maybe with hindsight, different choices and better decisions should have been made, but they were made in good faith and in the belief that they were the best that could be done at the time,' the author says.
When asked what he wants readers to take away from the book, he answers, "This book shows readers the endeavor, minor prosecution and history of a typical small lower middle-class family who struggled to survive but succeeded against opposition and adversity. We truly believe that honest endeavors and faith in a Divine Providence will always lead to success."
