David W. Klasing, Esq., CPA, the founder and managing attorney of the Tax Law Offices of David W. Klasing, P. C., published an article entitled “Tax Net Widens: Ruling Puts Out-of-State Service Providers at Risk,” in the most recent issue of California CPA, a print and digital magazine owned and operated by the nonprofit organization, California Society of CPAs.

In the article, Klasing addresses “Bindley,” the recent court case regarding a self-employed film writer residing in Arizona. The court decision found that nonresidents who perform services or provide business to California-based organizations are now required to file California state tax returns for the year in which the person conducted the business. The ruling was issued on May 30, 2019, which means that individuals should be aware of the law throughout the 2020 tax season. Klasing’s article describes the ruling, the consequences, and the new future for California businesses and proprietors.

“Most Californians have heard about this ruling, but many out-of-staters—those who need to hear about these changes the most—have not, which means that the article can reach more people,” said Klasing, Esq., CPA. “The ‘Bindley’ ruling has precedential effect, which means it can be cited by the state to broaden its tax reach. It’s imperative that anyone affiliated with a California organization fully understand the impact of the ruling.”

Klasing is an expert in California tax law and is licensed as a tax attorney throughout the state. His article has been released in time for the 2020 tax season. Those interested can access the article online at: http://californiacpa.calcpa.org/?issueID=100&pageID=1. The print issue will be mailed to California Society of CPAs members.
