A November 19 article on Florida Today reported on The National Day Archives’ newest addition to its calendar: Botox Cosmetic Day. The injection’s November celebratory day is in recognition of the positive impact it has made in the lives of millions of patients across the globe. Orange County-based plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Jazayeri says that, while traditional plastic surgeries have the benefit of being permanent, the ease of injectable-based cosmetic treatments is appealing to a larger group of people than ever before.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Jazayeri notes that cosmetic procedures have dramatically increased in popularity over the years, especially among everyday individuals who may have first learned about the treatment from TV shows like TMZ or online entertainment sites which touted their use by celebrities. From office workers to lawyers, everyone is interested in enhancing their appearances so that they can always put their best face forward, the doctor explains. The Southern California surgeon says that unlike plastic surgery, fillers and injections are noninvasive, which means there is little to no downtime needed to recover and they can typically be done in the space of a long lunch break. The quick and easy nature of cosmetic treatments is attractive to individuals looking to improve their looks without a surgical procedure, says Dr. Jazayeri.

The Orange County-based plastic surgeon says that a growing number of cosmetic patients are actually young women in their 20s and 30s. While enhancements used to be more common for older individuals with maturing skin, these days the younger crowd is becoming more concerned about maintaining their youthful skin. Dr. Jazayeri comments that by making slight adjustments and enhancements to their skin through fillers or injectables, millennials are able to preserve their skin’s youthfulness as opposed to fixing issues after they have already set in.

Even so, Dr. Jazayeri adds, patients need to keep in mind that injection-based treatments are nearly always temporary in nature and, to get the full benefit, patients need to repeat them indefinitely. He adds that traditional plastic surgeries such as facelifts and eyelifts (blepharoplasty) last indefinitely and can do things that are not really possible with nonsurgical procedures. As the popularity and accessibility to cosmetic procedures increase, Dr. Jazayeri cautions prospective patients to carefully research where they choose to have their treatments done and to seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon even for nonsurgical procedures. Going to someone with complete medical expertise has many benefits in terms of both safety and outcomes.
