Critical Alert Systems shared a comprehensive case study today about Decatur Morgan Hospital and their remarkable success significantly improving patient experience as reflected by HCAHPS scores, enhancing care delivery and increasing nurse retention utilizing the Critical Alert patient communication platform.
In the early 2000s, Decatur Morgan was experiencing a high RN turnover rate (greater than 25%), very low patient experience scores, and patient satisfaction quality metrics that were well below the national average. In 2014, the hospital committed to change the landscape of their facility. They began the journey by establishing an open dialogue with nursing staff so they could create a plan together to address the myriad issues and get nurses back at the bedside.
Some of the notable goals included building better relationships with patients and staff as well as having everyone work to the top of their license, meaning support staff did all the tasks that didn’t require a nursing license (e.g.: preparing meds). It was also imperative to address the technology ecosystem and ensure that it was supporting their plan, not hindering it.
With Critical Alert, Decatur Morgan was able to maximize advanced reporting and analytics, RTLS and ADT integrations, customizable workflows, active directory sign-on, staff assignment, EMR documentation and medication verification which enabled them to achieve their goals. Today, the RNs’ time at the bedside increased by nearly 50%; Press Ganey scores skyrocketed from 19% to 95%, and RN retention is over 90% with only a 7% turnover rate.
“Partnering with a comprehensive nurse call and patient communication system such as Critical Alert allowed us to optimize the technology and make it work for us,” said Bryan Vest, MSN, RN, service line director inpatient nursing at Decatur Morgan. “Its flexibility and reporting capabilities contributed to true, measurable process improvement,” continued Vest.
“Critical Alert is delighted to have partnered with Decatur Morgan to accomplish such extraordinary objectives. They are truly a progressive thought leader and we are hopeful that this case study will inspire other healthcare facilities to take on similar challenges that they may be facing,” stated John Elms, CEO of Critical Alert Systems. “We look forward to continuing our support of Decatur Morgan as they apply these principles to other units,” said Elms.
