In the early 2000s, Decatur Morgan was experiencing a high RN turnover rate (greater than 25%), very low patient experience scores, and patient satisfaction quality metrics that were well below the national average. In 2014, the hospital committed to change the landscape of their facility. They began the journey by establishing an open dialogue with nursing staff so they could create a plan together to address the myriad issues and get nurses back at the bedside.
Some of the notable goals included building better relationships with patients and staff as well as having everyone work to the top of their license, meaning support staff did all the tasks that didn't require a nursing license (e.g.: preparing meds). It was also imperative to address the technology ecosystem and ensure that it was supporting their plan, not hindering it.

Today, the RNs' time at the bedside increased by nearly 50%; Press Ganey scores skyrocketed from 19% to 95%, and RN retention is over 90% with only a 7% turnover rate.
