Deep Learning Technology Helps Improve Diagnostics of Breast Cancer
Houston, TX (PRWEB) September 29, 2015 -- Every year 1.6 million women in US will undergo breast biopsy procedure to determine if cancer is present in the breast tissue. To establish accurate diagnosis, a standard set of cancer biomarkers is applied to the piece of biopsy tissue. Then tissue slice is put on a glass slide and reviewed under the microscope by a pathologist, who will evaluate and score expression of biomarkers.
Accurate scoring of biomarker expression patterns is critical for determining best cancer treatment options, but there can be significant differences in how pathologists score biomarkers under the microscope. According to industry studies pathologist may disagree about diagnosis in as many as 25% of breast cancer cases.
To solve this problem, Houston-based software company, Smart Imaging Technologies, has developed a fully automated application that helps pathologists quickly and consistently score breast cancer biomarkers with the power of visual recognition deep learning technology.
Application called Smart IHC™ works with whole slide images and can process entire tissue slide automatically in the background within 2-6 minutes. It automatically identifies the type of biomarker and applies appropriate scoring methods to all tissue areas on the slide. Application learns patterns from previous slides with known diagnosis and does not require manual selection of parameters by pathologists. When analysis is complete, the application sends notification with results and a link to slide image accessible from anywhere via a web browser.
“Deep Learning Visual Recognition technology has shown tremendous success in areas where we need to differentiate subtle visual patterns and we are excited to bring the benefits of this technology to the cancer diagnostics”, said Vitali Khvatkov, Founder of Smart Imaging Technologies. “Deep Learning technology allows pathologists to achieve new level of accuracy and performance in scoring breast cancer biomarkers “, he added.
