The Angel Capital Summit, Colorado's largest angel investing event, is taking place in Denver on March 11.

Now in its 13th year, the Angel Capital Summit, hosted by the Rockies Venture Club, has become Colorado’s largest angel investing event. With over 300 people in attendance, the Summit is a celebration of startups, investors, and big ideas. Since 2014, companies that have pitched at the Angel Capital Summit have received funding at nearly 10 times the national average.

This year, the Summit will focus on Colorado unicorns (defined as privately held companies with a valuation of $1 billion or more), and their contributions to the startup community. With deep insights into global economic trends and capital movements, the event will provide the perfect environment for unicorn expansion. The Summit will also feature speakers, pitches from potential future unicorns, and plenty of networking time for angel investors, VCs and entrepreneurs.

RVC Executive Director, Peter Adams says, “We’re excited that Colorado has three new unicorns as of last year. (Ibotta, Guild Education and Evercommerce). We’re taking an introspective look at whether this impacts the Colorado angel investing community and our strategy for investing in great Colorado startups. Angels do well in their investments by “hitting singles, doubles and triples consistently”, but is it a better strategy to go for the grand slam every now and then? I’m excited to hear from RVC portfolio companies at the conference who are “unicorn potential” investments to understand how they think about their own strategies for going all the way, or exiting strategically before becoming unicorns.”

The Angel Capital Summit keynote speaker, Jim Franklin, is an expert in this trend. A seasoned angel investor, and past President of RVC, Mr. Franklin has led high-growth companies including Sendgrid, Decisioneering, Oracle, Yonomi, and Startup Colorado. He will use his experiences as an investor, entrepreneur, and corporate leader to provide insight into what it takes for Colorado companies to get to unicorn scale - and if that is necessarily a good thing.

The event will also focus on the state of unicorn growth in Colorado, highlighting three fast-growing startups in a fireside chat. Heather Potters of PharmaJet, Cody Cornell of Swimlane, and Andrew Alterfor of CirrusMD will discuss their experiences raising angel capital, scaling their businesses, and looking toward exits in a high-growth ecosystem.

Along with these speakers, the Summit will feature pitches from eight up-and-coming startups seeking funding, an investor forum for accredited angels to discuss those deals, and many opportunities to network with angel investors and entrepreneurs in the Colorado startup community. New this year, the Summit will also host an Angel Investing Practicum March 10, the day before the conference, for new and veteran angel investors to practice applied investment skills in an all-day hands-on workshop. If you are an accredited investor looking to learn from and invest in the next wave of Colorado unicorns, the Angel Capital Summit is the perfect opportunity to get involved.

The ultimate goal of the conference is to put together investment syndicates among RVC’s 220 angel investors who will have the opportunity to meet the day after the conference, March 12, to review the presenters and decide which companies will move ahead to due diligence and investment.
