DENVER, Oct. 4, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Design Workshop, an international landscape architecture, planning and urban design firm, is honored to announce that the firm received four national awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects. The ASLA Professional Awards received 465 entries this year and recognized 28 projects from around the world for their craft, innovative approach to design and planning, and overall contributions to the profession.
"We are honored to be recognized by the ASLA with four National Awards in three distinctively different categories," said Robb Berg, President of Design Workshop. "We take great pride in our firm's diverse portfolio and breath of reach within the profession. This recognition reflects the talent of our team, the trust of our clients and the collaboration that is required to execute legacy projects."
Here is a snapshot of the four projects that received ASLA awards:
Midtown Park – (Houston, TX) – Honor Award in Urban Design
Midtown Park is the realization of a revitalized Midtown Houston. In 2010, Design Workshop and the Midtown Redevelopment Authority created a vision plan that identified catalyst projects to help overcome the social, environmental, and economic disparities plaguing the community. As the capstone project, Midtown Park brings together affordable housing, connectivity, and green open spaces to create a premier destination for what is now considered the "most walkable neighborhood" in Houston. Recently designated as a SITES Silver certified site (the first in Houston), the park represents sustainability and resilience in one of the nation's largest and most diverse cities.
Quarry House (Park City, UT) – Honor Award in Residential Design
During the site excavation of Quarry House, contractors unexpectedly unearthed a 400-foot-long sandstone escarpment shaped long ago by wind and water. The design team scrapped the original plan and embraced the natural ledge, integrating it into the design of the house. Working with a team of geological engineers, contractors, and surveyors, Design Workshop exposed the cross-stratified layers using specialized tools and hand techniques, turning the slab into a prominent feature of the house, further blending the design into the surrounding nature.
Connecting People and Landscape: Integrating Cultural Landscapes, Climate Resiliency, and Growth Management in the Low Country (Beaufort County, SC) – Honor Award in Analysis and Planning
The impacts of sea level rise and population growth threaten Beaufort County, South Carolina's cultural landscapes, ecosystems, historically black communities, and agricultural landscapes. To combat these issues, Design Workshop collaborated with the county and communities to create the 2020 Beaufort County Greenprint Plan and the 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
Working during the height of Covid-19 we were still able to achieve statistically relevant community engagement using innovative storytelling techniques. Based on this engagement and extensive research, the team developed two plans that ultimately work together and create a model that integrates climate change with future growth modeling and conservation strategies, and approaches for placemaking, affordable housing, development, trails and walkability.
Reimagine Nature and Inclusion for Salt Lake City (Sale Lake City, UT) – Honor Award in Analysis and Planning
The planning process for the Salt Lake City Public Lands Master Plan started just as the pandemic began and civic protests centered around critical social and environmental issues took hold. Design Workshop's team embraced this as the opportunity to tackle complex and contentious issues facing the city, including homelessness, racial justice, urbanization, and climate change.
Branded "Reimagine Nature," this project inspired community members to explore how city-managed outdoor spaces can address current events centered around core values of equity, stewardship, and livability. The team reached 12,000 community members from all populations to create an actionable 10-year vision for the city's expansive landscape of 83 parks and public spaces, 70-miles of trails, 1,700-acres of natural lands, and 86,500 urban trees.
