Diabetes and Endocrinology Program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Expands with New Leader
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (PRWEB) September 04, 2018 -- Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital named Jose Atilio Canas, M.D., FA.A.P., F.A.C.E., director of endocrinology and diabetes. He will enhance care for children with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, as well as strengthen diabetes prevention services. Dr. Canas will see patients at the hospital’s main campus in St. Petersburg and at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Outpatient Care, Sarasota.
“With his clinical experience and research interests, Dr. Canas will help elevate our program and treatment for children living with diabetes,” said Jonathan Ellen, M.D., president and vice dean at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. “There have been many advancements in diabetes treatment and prevention for children and we’re looking forward to Dr. Cana’s expertise in addressing the risks of blindness and renal failure, but also his focus on other areas such as cardiovascular risks related to diabetes.”
Dr. Canas brings three decades of training and practice in endocrinology to his role at Johns Hopkins All Children’s. He was previously associate attending at Wolfson Children's Hospital, and served as medical director of the Nemours Pediatric Cardio Metabolic and Bariatric Center in Jacksonville, Florida. He was also an associate professor of pediatrics in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, director of the pediatric diabetes program at Winthrop University Hospital and clinical associate in pediatric endocrinology at Nemours Children’s Clinic.
His research interests include using of carotenoids—plant pigments found in yellow, orange, red and green vegetables that prevent the buildup of fat deposits in humans—for obesity prevention. He most recently led a study on the effects of carotenoids on obesity in children, which was published in March 2017 in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
