WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Sept. 13, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The award will be bestowed upon Oakman at the Women Lawyers of Ventura County (WLVC) 13th Annual Scholarship Dinner and Silent Auction. The event takes place on Thursday, October 17, at the Museum of Ventura County, 100 East Main Street, Ventura, CA from 6-9 p.m. Oakman will be receiving the award along with the Legacy Award recipient and keynote speaker, Melinda Johnson, Ventura's first female judge.
"I am honored to receive this award from such a great organization. I am also excited this may bring additional attention to the Conejo Free Clinic, which does such important work," said Oakman, who focuses on criminal and family law and is also Vice President of the Ventura County Family Law Bar.
The Holly Spevak award honors attorneys who exemplify a commitment to serve others and provide "access to justice" through pro-bono work in the same spirit of Spevak, who passed in 2007. This year's award recipient, Oakman, sits on the Board of the Conejo Free Legal Clinic as Secretary of the Board and Legal Director. In her spare time Oakman volunteers at the Conejo Free Legal Clinic, and is an Adjunct Professor at California Lutheran University, where she teaches Criminal Law and Procedure for the Criminal Justice Department.
At this year's event, the WLVC will also award scholarships to law students who have demonstrated a commitment to serving the public interest and/or advancing the interests of women and girls in society. The event includes wine and beer tasting, dinner catered by Main Course California, and a silent auction benefiting WLVC's student scholarship fund and local non-profit Girls Inc.
