Direct Consignments From Two Great Burgundy Domaines Soar Over The High Estimates
Hong Kong (PRWEB) June 04, 2014 -- Hong Kong– June 2, 2014 – Collectors from around the world seized the opportunity to buy perfectly stored lots that came directly from two of the great Domaines of Burgundy, Chateau de la Tour and Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, at Acker Merrall’s May 30-31 Hong Kong auction. Both direct consignments well exceeded pre-sale estimates, as collectors battled furiously to own wines direct from these legendary estate’s cellars with the owners in attendance. Rare magnum vertical collections of Liger-Belair Echezeaux and Aux Brulees from 2008-2010 (2 magnums each) sold for HK$79,040/$US10,159 and HK$74,100/US$9,524 respectively, while three bottles of the newest release of 2011 Liger-Belair La Romanee sold for an impressive HK$69,160/US$8,889. The offering from Chateau de la Tour featured old, rarely seen vintages back to 1885, and buyers jumped at the chance to own their piece of Burgundy history. Highlights blowing through the high estimates included a case of 1945 Clos Vougeot selling for HK$177,840/$US22,858 and the new, 50 case production of 2010 Clos Vougeot Hommage a Jean Morin seeing three magnums sell for HK$59,280/US$7,620. The highlight of the sale, though, was a once-in-a-lifetime 7 bottle and 1 magnum lot of Clos de Vougeot, including dinner with owner Francois Labet at his Chateau, featuring 1885, 1895, 1904, 1915, 1919, 1923, 1929 and closing with a magnum of the famous 1945. The lot ended up selling in the room after a valiant battle over two phone bidders, selling to an anonymous collector for over four times high estimate at HK$592,800/US$76,195.
DRC dominated the Top 25 Lots sold over the weekend. The most expensive lot of the auction was a six bottle lot of the great 1999 Romanee-Conti, which sold for HK$691,600/US$88,895. World records were also notably set for six significant lots of DRC: 1993 & 1998 Assortments, 1997 Montrachet in 3-liter and 6-liter, and magnums of Romanee-Conti of 2007 and 2008. Over 90 new world records were set overall, of which Burgundy accounted for approximately 75%. The breadth of demand among collectors for Burgundy was again apparent given the new records set not only for Liger-Belair, Chateau de la Tour and DRC, but also for Leroy, Dujac, Jayer, Lafon, Roumier, Mugnier, Drouhin, Meo-Camuzet and Raveneau. Other notable world records outside the Burgundy box were set by Biondi Santi, Chapoutier, Climens, Ducru Beaucaillou, Gaja, Jacques Selosses, L’Angelus, La Mission Haut Brion, La Mondotte, Pape Clement, Pavie, Petrus, Pichon Baron, Screaming Eagle and Taittinger.
