Harry Keatts Chenault Jr., PhD, offers a researched examination of the actions of three key historical figures regarding U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and how their influence has endured in his new history book, “Hope and Destiny: Truman, Eisenhower, Fulbright, and US Foreign Policy in the Middle East, 1945-1958” (published by Archway Publishing).
Chenault aims to show how President Truman, President Eisenhower and Senator Fulbright “cast a long shadow over U.S. foreign policies in the Middle East.” The author discusses the Truman Doctrine of 1947, the Eisenhower Doctrine of 1957 and the Fulbright Resolution of 1957, Middle East, US foreign policy, Cold War, Israeli and Arab world perspective on US foreign policies, Soviet Union in the Middle East, war, and debate on the use of presidential war-making policies. He explores how their actions resonate today in regards to winning the Cold War and with Resolution 242 remaining as the basis of the Middle East peace process in the 21st century.
First and foremost Chenault hopes that his book helps readers see “that there is hope for the Middle East. People there want to get married, raise a family and go to work. They want to do all of that under the canopy of peace and freedom with justice. Living among the Israeli, Palestinian and Egyptian societies was an education above and beyond the classroom.”
