VCC technologies and services provide Discovery with the flexibility to innovate and undertake new production despite Covid-19 challenge

“Even before the pandemic, the complexity and number of remotes required for the show meant we likely could not do this show without our partners at the VCC. The fact that we are able to proceed as planned is remarkable.” -Jason Cooper, Executive In Charge Of Production at Discovery Studios

The Video Call Center (VCC) today announced that its contract with Discovery, Inc. has been extended, enabling the media company to expand its use of the VCC’s video caller-based production platform and production services. The VCC solution is making it possible for Discovery to overcome the challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic to produce tell all specials for the 90 Day Fiancé franchise, and a new, upcoming live, late-night series for TLC, Find Live Love, scheduled to air Sunday nights at 11pm ET/PT beginning May 10, 2020.

The VCC solution has been used to support Discovery productions since 2017. VCC is integral to the production of a variety of popular shows for the network, including TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé, Before the 90 Days, After the 90 Days, and The Other Way, as well as TLC’s Unexpected and Food Network’s Thanksgiving Kitchen Live.

The new show Find Love Live will make extensive use of VCC’s location-agnostic video call production capabilities to maintain a responsible, socially-distanced production process. With the exception of the in-studio host, the entire cast of the weekly show, along with special guests and audience members, will join the show by live remote via the VCC’s platform and be supported by VCC’s call production staff, who will be working from their homes using specialized remote systems that VCC had developed just prior to the pandemic.

Jason Cooper, Executive In Charge Of Production at Discovery Studios said, “We are very excited to break new ground and deliver a dating show that is like nothing viewers have seen before. Even before the pandemic, the complexity and number of remotes required for the show meant we likely could not do this show without our partners at the VCC. The fact that we are able to proceed as planned is remarkable.”

The unique, lag-free, two-way communication capabilities of the VCC means that all participants in the program will be able to see and hear each other in real-time to maintain smooth flowing interactions. Each remote participant requires only a smartphone or other Internet-connected device to join.

Find Love Live producers will also make use of the VCC’s Caller Queue® system to recruit, screen, and prepare members of the live viewing audience to appear on air as prospective daters. VCC call producers will optimize the connection, visual appearance, and other details to prepare callers for air. Caller Queue will enable producers to sort and filter potential participants to best suit the show’s requirements. The system also provides mechanisms that enable callers to complete release forms prior to participating. Caller Queue was previously used with great success on Food Network’s Thanksgiving Live special when more than 700 audience members connected to join the show at a rate faster than one per second.

VCC CEO Larry Thaler said, “These are challenging times and we are thankful for the opportunity to continue to help Discovery innovate, both in terms of what viewers see on-air and the creative production that takes place behind the scenes. Together we continue to push new boundaries, increasing the number of simultaneous remotes and holding them at high quality for as long as 16 hours, all to enable the producers to achieve the very best results. Together with Discovery we are breaking new ground and showing the TV industry a new way forward.”
