An estimated 1 in 5 preschool children have vision problems and 1 in 4 school-age children wear corrective eyewear in this country. Undiagnosed and uncorrected eye and vision problems in children are a public health concern and the American Optometric Association and Optometry Cares are urging all parents and caregivers to ensure their children get regular in-person, comprehensive eye exams with a doctor of optometry.
Infants should receive a comprehensive baseline eye exam between 6 and 12 months of age, immediately after the eyes undergo rapid and profound changes and are therefore most vulnerable to interference with healthy development.
To encourage all parents and caregivers to get in person, comprehensive eye exams for their children, AOA and Optometry Cares teamed with Dr. Jennifer Smith Zolman, YourUpdate TV and D S Simon Media on a nationwide media tour. Dr. Zolman addressed the importance of vision assessments for babies 6 to 12 months of age, demonstrated what goes on during an eye assessment, and discussed the InfantSEE program.
Routine vision screenings cannot be relied on to catch most vision problems. In fact, these tests fail to catch a wide variety of eye and overall health conditions that only a comprehensive eye exam can catch
- Even if problems are detected, 61 percent of those children with a problem will not receive appropriate follow-up. Evidence demonstrates that the best course of action is following an annual eye exam schedule.
