“Solo Mom” from Christian Faith Publishing author Donna Sutherland is a beautiful parenting memoir that simultaneously reveals the difficulties of flying solo—the author’s separation from her husband leaving her to raise their two sons alone—as well as the inspiring courage found in being entrusted to stand alone as a source of strength for others.

“Solo Mom”: a magnificent, soaring memoir of life as a single mother of two boys. “Solo Mom” is the creation of published author Donna Sutherland, a semi-retired nurse, mother of two adult sons, and grandmother of three girls, now living in Southwestern Utah with her two cats.

Sutherland writes, “The title Solo Mom came about due to the experience of single parenting. The word solo is an amazing word that can have several different connotations. First, it can mean ‘so low’ which can indicate a state of being at a low point in life that feels deep and alone. Second, the word solo is one step up and means ‘only’ or just ‘one.’ This seems to indicate that there is sadness or loneliness associated with it. Then there is a ‘solo flight.’ This reminds me of when my son Brandon was taking pilot lessons. After testing and practice with an instructor, he finally was able to make his solo flight. He had the power of the airplane at his fingertips, and the ability to soar on his own. He would fly over the house and call on his cell phone to say, ‘Mom, can you see me now?’ An exhilarating feeling of soaring on one’s own because they have been entrusted with such a great responsibility. And that is what our solo moments become when we continue to look upward to answers to our questions of ‘Why?’”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Donna Sutherland’s new book is an encouraging parenting story that will fortify other solo travelers in their often-lonesome trek through life.

With candor and invaluable insights of lessons learned on the way, Sutherland shares her motherhood experiences so readers in similar straits can compare notes, realize they are not actually alone, and be heartened in the reminder that great things can happen with a little faith, love, and enough fuel for the single-captain journey with the kids.
