Organizational psychologist and author Douglas R. Bunker asks, “What would happen in organizations if leaders used their power to encourage the full participation of subordinates?” In his book titled “Leader Power and Subordinate Engagement: A View from Below” (published by Archway Publishing), Bunker proposes ways managers can create positive relationships with their subordinates that promote exceptional performance.

In the book, managers will learn how to understand why subordinates accept or reject messages from them, examine the underlying ethical and moral perspectives on power and think differently about their own use of power. It also explains how to address the three fundamental needs of employees: agency, growth and justice. Bunker believes that working toward fulfilling these needs will enhance leaders and subordinates success.

“This book brings together in a thoughtful way thinking in many fields about organizations and how they could be both more productive and more humane,” Bunker points out. “It emphasizes employee needs and participation rather than on leader behavior.”

Filled with case studies and research, “Leader Power and Subordinate Engagement: A View from Below” aims to provide managers with new ideas about how to think about managing people at work, transform their company culture, bolster communication and reap its rewards.
