This course is focused on detecting, diagnosing and treating peri-implantitis diseases through a program of systematic, proven dental implant maintenance. Geared toward hygienists, this four-part series provides attendees with two continuing education credits.
Though applicable to all practicing dental providers, this series will concentrate heavily on the roles hygienists play in stopping periodontal conditions like peri-implantitis before they begin, as well as treating them using innovative techniques. As with all the study club sessions, this one will include time to work through diagnoses, talk about objectives, discuss minimally invasive solutions, visualize and sequence procedures, and address the inter-connection between oral health and overall health.
Peri-implantitis occurs when bacteria build up and infect the periodontal pockets formed between the dental implant and surrounding gum tissues. Symptoms of peri-implantitis include swelling or bleeding of the tissue around the implant, gum sensitivity, and implant mobility and exposure. Without intervention and immediate treatment, peri-implantitis can lead to extensive soft tissue and bone loss, drastically increasing the risk for the loss of the dental implant. If the dental implant must be removed, the site may take months to heal before another dental implant can be placed.
