BALTIMORE, October 12, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Alumnus and key constituents from the Hawks for Football, Inc. (HFF) have announced a conference built to inspire and strengthen our community and alumni networks. HFF has organized and birthed the Inaugural HBCU Educational and Alumni Award Conference: "Our Legacy is Our Future."
The conference begins October 27th at Baltimore's Reginald F. Lew Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture. We will recognize excellence, educate ourselves, and work to deliver a premier HBCU experience today and well into the future. Tickets can be purchased for the HBCU legacy event online.
It's a privilege to welcome renowned scholar Eddie Glaude Jr. as our keynote speaker. He is a bestselling author, Department Chair and professor at Princeton University, who brings a powerful knowledge of religion and race in America. Glaude's latest book "Begin Again: James Baldwin's America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own," is a bestseller. "Glaude's work as a professor, intellectual, and author is urgently needed and we are delighted to present such an inspiring speaker to the community." said Wayne Jearld, HFF Executive Director.
The conference will include workshops, talks, networking and an awards dinner honoring HBCU leaders. "Our awards dinner recognizes those who are dedicated to excellence and bettering the HBCU community and the UMES network." adds Mr. Jearld.
The award recipients include NFL hall of fame athlete John Wesley Smith, for his outstanding athletic achievements. Also honored will be football great Anthony Jones, whose NFL career included winning the Super Bowl with the Washington Commanders. Both of these men embody the success and values we embrace in trying to restore football to UMES.
Turning to academics, Dr Ambrose Jearld Jr. will be recognized for having brought amazing collaborations to our university research community, demonstrating terrific leadership and for teaching young people about the importance of the marine environment. The dinner will also honor Dr. Earl S. Richardson, President Emeritus of Morgan State University. Among his great list of accomplishments is the work on the 15 year State of Maryland lawsuit awarding $577 million to four Maryland HBCUs.
