Beanlands, MD, MASNC, deputy director general of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, internationally acclaimed cardiovascular investigator, and ASNC Past President will deliver the Mario Verani Memorial Lecture, titled "Imaging Trials and Tribulations – Do We Hibernate, Go With the Flow, or Light the Flame?" at ASNC2023 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Beanlands' lecture will address three exciting areas where nuclear cardiology has had impact and/or is rapidly advancing: myocardial viability, quantification of myocardial blood flow, and inflammation.

Beanlands, MD, MASNC, deputy director general of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and internationally acclaimed cardiovascular investigator, will deliver the Mario Verani Memorial Lecture at the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) 2023 Annual Scientific Session and Exhibition. Dr. Beanlands plans to ask the community of cardiac imagers to do some serious "soul searching" about voids in the research that physicians rely on when making clinical decisions that impact the diagnosis and treatment of heart patients.
Randomized clinical trials are the highest level of evidence but are difficult to conduct in imaging since imaging is not directly linked to outcomes. Dr. Beanlands' ASNC2023 lecture, titled "Imaging Trials and Tribulations – Do We Hibernate, Go With the Flow, or Light the Flame?", will review the challenges for cardiac imaging trials and how they can be conducted to provide findings that can be implemented in real-world patient care.
"We are at a critical time point in imaging – and in nuclear cardiology in particular – where we need to be striving for the best evidence. This will guide us to really understand how to use imaging to move practice forward for the best possible outcomes for patients," Dr. Beanlands says.
Dr. Beanlands' lecture title includes a nod to three exciting areas where nuclear cardiology has had impact and/or is rapidly advancing: myocardial viability, quantification of myocardial blood flow, and inflammation. His research in these and other areas has led to pioneering translational work that has impacted the field's understanding of disease, application in patient care, health policy, and guidelines. He has led or co-led numerous multicenter imaging research initiatives, including PARR2, IMAGE-Heart Failure, CAIN, CADENCE, and CHASM.
At the University of Ottawa, Dr. Beanlands is the Distinguished Chair of Cardiovascular Imaging and a professor in the Division of Cardiology as well as the Department of Radiology and the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. From 2012 to 2022, he served as chair and chief of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute's cardiology division. He is also the founding director of the National Cardiac Centre, which is the first PET facility in Canada dedicated to cardiovascular disease.
A past president of both ASNC and the Canadian Nuclear Cardiology Society (CSNCCT), Dr. Beanlands has received numerous awards for his achievements as a researcher, educator and clinician. Recent awards include the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for contributions to Canada; Career Achievement Awards from the CSNCCT and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS); Research Achievement Awards from the Society of Nuclear Medicine and the CCS; and the CCS/Canadian Institutes of Health Research Distinguished Lecturer Award.
