According to Shephard, the opioid epidemic is sweeping the United States, and because orthopedic surgeons are the fourth-highest opioid prescribers, it is more critical than ever before that patients have surgeons they can trust. This is why Shephard created the website -- to help people to learn how to handle pain management in the midst of the current opioid crisis.
On the website, both current patients and potential patients can discover how to manage their pain without necessarily using opioid pain relievers. For example, NSAIDs and acetaminophen can be taken at the same time without cross-reacting. In addition, readers can learn about the indicators of opioid addiction.
Shephard also uses his website to explain the anterior approach, a hip replacement surgery method that is minimally invasive. This approach can help patients to experience less damage to their muscles and thus less pain following surgery, along with a briefer recovery period. With this approach, patients may not feel the need to rely on opioid pain relievers as they would with traditional hip replacement surgery.
Shephard earned his degree in medicine in 2010 from Michigan State University and completed his residency in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. Since then, he has trained and practiced medicine not only in the United States but also in other countries, such as Malawi and Costa Rica.
