Dr. Sangeetha Metlapally Joins the Faculty at New England College of Optometry
New England College of Optometry, NECO, welcomes Dr. Sangeetha Metlapally to the faculty in the Department of Vision Science. She brings her wealth of experience in optometrist practice and research to the College in the areas of Optics and Binocular Vision.
BOSTON, March 6, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- New England College or Optometry is pleased to welcome Assistant Professor Sangeetha Metlapally, BS Opt, PhD, FAAO. Dr. Sangeetha Metlapally joined New England College of Optometry on Dec. 1, 2018, as a faculty member in the Department of Vision Science. She will teach courses in the OD and MS curricula, and continue her research in the fields of Optics and Binocular Vision.
Dr. Metlapally is a graduate of the Elite School of Optometry (ESO) in Chennai India and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, (BITS) in Pilani, India. Following graduation, Dr. Metlapally spent a year in optometric practice in the Department of Optometry at the Medical Research Foundation of Chennai. She began her research career in Australia with a PhD in Vision Science funded by competitive scholarships at the School of Optometry, The University of Melbourne. Through her PhD studies, she investigated how signals from lens defocus manipulations regulate eye growth and short-sightedness (myopia) and worked with Professor Neville McBrien.
After completing her PhD, Dr. Metlapally moved to the United States for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. While at UNC, her research characterized the ultramicroscopic features of the crystalline lens in the eye to estimate the scattering and opacity they would produce in advanced age-related cataracts. During her tenure as a Clinical Scientist at the School of Optometry at the University of California (UC) at Berkeley, she established a patient-oriented clinical research program (see current research on her research page), while being funded by the National Eye Institute's K12 and K23 awards and working with Professors Clifton Schor, Martin Banks, and Austin Roorda. Her research currently focuses on the influence of ocular aberrations on binocular vision in conditions such as Keratoconus and following refractive surgery procedures such as LASIK.
Dr. Metlapally brings with her extensive individual and small group teaching experience in India, Australia, and the United States with optometry and graduate students. She will be teaching in the optics and binocular vision tracts at NECO and developing a laboratory to continue her studies in optics and binocular vision. Her wealth of experience in optometry and vision science will greatly augment the teaching and research programs at NECO.
