Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published on a dental website on 30 June 2014. The full article titled “Promoting better oral health awareness for people with learning disabilities” can be read here.
Dr Tariq Drabu in Manchester said, “A group of charity members will be used to support their peers on oral awareness and practices. This is a first of a kind scheme which uses those with learning disabilities to help their peers make a difference in their oral health. I think it’s such an exciting project that can make a huge difference in ensuring that those with learning disabilities get the education they need on oral health and the dental care they need moving forward.”
Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say, “Up to twelve clients of the Plymouth Highbury Trust will receive knowledge and skills to get the message across to their peers. The training will focus on brushing, diet and dental care access in the hope of achieving success in oral hygiene and encouraging the patients to attend regular dental visits. The training will take place over six weeks using engaging and fun methods including a visit to the Devonport Dental Educational Facility. The aim is to reassure the patients that a visit to the dentist isn’t a bad thing.”
Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying, “I am so excited to see how the project grows in the coming weeks as this could become a nationwide effort to help those throughout the United Kingdom with learning disabilities improve their oral health.”
