DUNWOODY, Ga., Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- From Manhattan to Dunwoody: E. 48th Street Market Celebrates 40 Years of Family, Flavor, and Tradition
In 1986, Charlie and Anita Augello took a leap of faith. On a train ride through Europe, they decided to trade the corporate world for a dream: bringing the authentic, neighborhood flavors of their New York City upbringing to the South. This year, E. 48th Street Market officially celebrates 40 years as a cornerstone of the Dunwoody community.
Named after the Manhattan street where Charlie worked in his Uncle Joe's grocery store as a young boy, E. 48th Street Market was born out of a longing for the "basic essentials" of a New York Italian life—crusty bread, fresh pasta, and a familiar butcher who knew your name.
"When we moved to Atlanta, the items we grew up with simply weren't here," says Anita. "Every trip back home involved a massive shopping list, and every visitor from the North was given a wish list of groceries to bring down. Eventually, we realized we needed to create that home right here in Dunwoody."
What began as a small shop for take-away Hero sandwiches and family-recipe Italian meals has evolved into a full-scale culinary landmark. Over four decades, the Market has expanded to include:
- An Artisan Bakery: Famed for its daily-baked crusty Italian bread.
- A Premier Wine Selection: Offering 140 notable Italian labels and an inviting wine bar.
- The Patio: Transforming from simple grocery shelves to a fully enclosed, climate-controlled dining area with retractable windows for year-round enjoyment. Where people can sit to enjoy lunch or dinner or meet friends for coffee and a cannoli or a slice of pizza.
- Full-Service Catering: Providing authentic Italian feasts for local parties and corporate luncheons.
The Market's success is rooted in family. While their son Chuck and daughters Erica and Claudia have all contributed to the legacy, eldest daughter Andrea now leads the daily operations, with grandchildren often seen helping—making it a true multi-generational "family affair."
The community has taken notice. Beyond winning numerous "Best of" awards, the Market reached a historic milestone on September 30, 2021, when the Mayor of Dunwoody issued a proclamation designating it "E. 48th Street Market Day." The mayor further recognized the Market as the longest-operating business with its original owners in Dunwoody's history.
"Our customers have become our friends," Anita reflects. "Children who once came in for a free cookie are now bringing their own children in for that same tradition. We wanted a neighborhood market, and the community gave us a home."
Beyond the counter, the Augellos remain deeply entrenched in the local fabric, supporting the Rotary Club of Dunwoody, the USO, the Dunwoody Police Department, and many of the local schools.
As they look toward the future, the Augello family invites old friends and new neighbors alike to stop by, grab a sandwich, and share a glass of wine.
Salute to 40 years!
