ElringKlinger and Daimler AG Select DuPont™ Zytel® for their Engine Brackets and Cylinder Head Covers
GENEVA (PRWEB) October 17, 2017 -- DuPont is proud to announce that its close collaboration with ElringKlinger and Daimler AG has led to the commercialization of two innovative automotive parts that boost cost and performance. The new structural engine brackets and cylinder head cover have been made possible thanks to the use of DuPont™ Zytel® polyamide resin and DuPont™ Zytel® PLUS nylon, respectively. The certification of these two highly glass-reinforced polyamides is another example of how DuPont works successfully and closely together with customers on application development, from start to finish.
The engine brackets are manufactured by ElringKlinger, a trusted partner to vehicle manufacturers, and validated by Daimler AG. Zytel® polyamide resin is glass fibre reinforced, designed to replace metal in automotive parts. It is a cost-efficient solution that supports the goal of a more pleasant driving experience as its use helps to improve NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness).
Engine brackets support high static loads and engine torque stresses. Thanks to DuPont™ Zytel® and its perfect balance of strength and stiffness, as well as its resistance to creep, deformation and fatigue, the harmful effects of stress and load are mitigated. DuPont application development capabilities were also key for the success of this project. The use of advanced FEA (Finite Element Analysis), combined with anisotropic material data characterisation, helped shorten the development time as performance of the finished part could be predicted with a precise degree of accuracy.
The new cylinder head cover, also developed jointly with ElringKlinger and Daimler AG, marks the very first commercial application of Zytel® PLUS nylon in this specific domain, and responds directly to latest industry trends of engines becoming more compact and generating hotter environments due to the proximity of exhaust lines. For this application, superior high temperature performance was therefore required, adapting to changing turbo charging demands. Zytel® PLUS was specifically developed to meet this challenge, resistant to temperatures of over 200 °C for more than 3000 hours.
“The key driver of these two commercial successes is our strong partnership with Daimler AG and ElringKlinger. Working closely together helped us to tackle some of the key challenges faced by the automotive industry. In DuPont, we support customers from “art to part” with FEA and CAD (Computer Aided Design) design expertise and help our customers take time, cost and risk out of their product development cycle. We help them innovate with confidence,” says Patrick Cazuc – Global Automotive Manager at DuPont.
DuPont will be present at the 25th edition of the Fakuma International Trade Fair for Plastics Processing Fakuma (Friedrichshafen Exhibition Centre, 17 to 21 October 2017), where it will demonstrate its latest product offerings such as these and show how the company is dedicated to giving shape to smart ideas.
