Eargo, the health tech company that’s destigmatizing hearing loss through consumer-driven innovation, was awarded Gold for its Eargo Max hearing aid in the Medical & Health category at this year’s International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) from the Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA). Eargo was also awarded the Jury’s Chair Award, chosen by IDEA 2018 Jury Chair Michael Kahwaji, of IDSA, and the Plastics Innovation Award, chosen by IDEA sponsor Plastics Industry Association. Winners were announced at the IDEA Ceremony and Gala at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, LA last month.

IDEA has 20 competition categories and demonstrates the expansive nature of industrial design and its impact on daily life. The categories for the 2018 program include Automotive and Transportation, Branding, Consumer Technology, Home, Medical and Health, Service Design, Student Designs and more.

The span of categories is a reflection of the magnitude of modern human need and a designer's remarkable ability to respond to challenges through creative thinking and thoughtful design. More than a competition in styling or trends, IDEA is an enduring mark of ingenuity that has been championing the best and brightest designers for decades.

Eargo Max was designed in partnership with Ammunition Group, the design masterminds behind Beats by Dre headphones and Square, to change the lives of baby boomers and enhance the auditory experience for millions of people suffering from hearing loss. Eargo removes all the barriers that once deterred people from seeking help for their hearing health needs, and transforms a once stigmatized health aid into an empowering tool for self-improvement.

“Our goal with Eargo Max was to create a hearing aid for the consumer that is beautifully designed to never be seen,” said Christian Gormsen, CEO of Eargo. “One of the biggest obstacles to using a hearing aid is social stigma. Eargo Max’s discreet design and patented Flexi Fibers — both of which allow it to sit inside the user’s ear, hidden from the outside world — remove those stigmas and empower those who otherwise wouldn’t have bought a hearing aid to once again experience life in full, rich sound.”
