Annual Report Provides Overall Effective Publisher Price Increases for Academic and Academic Medical Libraries
IPSWICH, Mass., Sept. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) has published the 2023 Serials Price Projection Report. This year's report projects that the overall effective publisher price increases for academic and academic medical libraries are expected to be (before any currency impact) in the range of three to five percent for individual e-journal titles, two to three percent for e-journal packages and four to six percent for print titles.
Published annually, EBSCO's Serials Price Projections is based on surveys of a wide range of publishers and reviews of historical serials pricing data to assist information professionals as they make budgeting decisions for the upcoming renewals season. This year's report looks at market dynamics highlighting many issues that are currently driving the scholarly information marketplace including the economic effects of COVID-19, high inflation rates, currency impact, the decline of print and the trend toward various forms of Open Access (OA) content.
The lasting effects of COVID-19, persistent supply chain issues and high inflation rates have impacted recent publisher costs. Additionally, the U.S. dollar has strengthened relative to other world currencies over the past year, which has the potential to add additional pressure on libraries outside of the U.S. that purchase publications priced by publishers in U.S. dollars. Print continues to decline and publishers are applying a higher price to the format as most libraries are operating under an e-acquisition strategy. The trend toward various forms of Open Access (OA) content is the fastest growing influencer in the scholarly information marketplace.
Although this report is based upon careful analysis, EBSCO recommends using caution when using these projections, as they rely on historical trends and current estimates.
