Economic Indicator: Divorces Up with the Rest of Economy

Plevy says a reason for the increase: divorcing couples feel they’ve finally made it through the worst of the economy--and are financially able to make changes.

The recession forced couples to stay together because they couldn’t afford to take the steps necessary to divorce. It wasn’t uncommon to see unhappy couples remaining in the same home – dividing space in the refrigerator, having separate days in which each would be responsible for feeding their children, etc.
While couples are now starting to file divorce suits, Dickerson says the recession has made them more conscious of their finances. “They’re trying to avoid putting themselves in significant debt,” says Dickerson, who says couples are settling earlier to avoid the costs associated with litigation. “Preparing for and then spending days at trial can significantly increase the cost of a divorce. Fiscally, it is better for the whole family if the parties are able to compromise and reach resolution of the issues involved in the dissolution of their marriage, which may include issues of custody, support and the division of property.” Adds Plevy, “Deciding not to spend the money on private investigators, bringing friends and family as witnesses and spending days in the courtroom saves everyone time and money.”
