EcoPlum Officially Joins the Fight with Plastic Pollution Coalition
EcoPlum® has joined Plastic Pollution Coalition, a global non-profit organization working to eliminate plastic pollution. The alliance includes over 1,000 organizations, businesses, and thought leaders in over 60 countries.
NEW YORK, Jan. 16, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today EcoPlum®, a sustainable promotional products and media company, announced that it has joined Plastic Pollution Coalition, a global non-profit organization working to eliminate plastic pollution.
Plastic Pollution Coalition is a growing, global alliance of businesses, organizations, individuals, and policymakers working toward a world free of plastic pollution and its toxic impacts on humans, animals, oceans, waterways, and the environment. The alliance includes over 1,000 organizations, businesses, and thought leaders in over 60 countries.
The coalition includes a cross-section of many prominent individuals, such as writer Margaret Atwood; musicians Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Ben Harper, and Jack Johnson; actors Danny Glover and Laura Dern; and environmentalists Bill McKibben and Fabien Cousteau.
Gia Machlin, EcoPlum President & CEO, said, "We are excited to join forces with Plastic Pollution Coalition and add our voice to their work, as we pursue our own efforts to eliminate single-use plastics in the promotional products industry and offer eco friendly options."
A successful entrepreneur, Gia founded EcoPlum in 2007 with the goal of inspiring and motivating people to live more sustainably and practice conscious purchasing. EcoPlum sells its Sustainable Swag® line of promotional products as alternatives to conventional merchandise that is produced without considering the environmental impact in materials or processes. EcoPlum, a for-profit company, is committed to a triple-bottom line focus on people, planet and profit.
Plastic Pollution Coalition Co-Founder & CEO Dianna Cohen said, "I met Gia at an event last year and after discussion of our mutual interest in eliminating plastic pollution, we are now very pleased to have EcoPlum join our global Coalition of advocate organizations."
Bringing action to reduce single-use plastic and increase awareness of the facts, Plastic Pollution Coalition highlights many problems with plastic:
- Americans discard 30 million tons of plastic a year, 33% is used once and thrown away, and only 8% is recycled. The rest ends up in landfills or makes its way into the ocean.
- Plastic does not biodegrade and disappear. It breaks down into smaller and smaller microplastic pieces and enters the food chain, consumed by marine life, then humans.
- Plastic waste accumulating in landfills releases toxic chemicals into the groundwater. Chemicals linked to plastics impact human health, including cancers, endocrine disruption, birth defects, and other ailments.
