Today, we are making huge strides toward realizing our vision of closing the global communication gap by introducing our fully-adaptive speaking assessment. Tomorrow, we will continue innovating and building toward a better, more affordable, and more scalable personalized language assessment.

Emmersion announced the release of the first fully-adaptive version of their automated speaking assessment. Its automated speaking assessment has been providing immense value to organizations all over the world by reducing the time and cost of accurate and immediate language screening.

As an adaptive assessment, each question is determined dynamically based on the test-taker’s performance on the previous question. The basic goal is to choose an easier question if the test-taker got the previous question wrong, and a more difficult question if the test-taker got the question right. This helps ensure that the questions being asked are the most relevant and informative.

The technology for computer adaptive assessments has been around for decades—but primarily in a multiple-choice format. Emmersion’s adaptive reading assessment was originally created over 20 years ago. Though technology and psychometric practices have improved adaptive assessment significantly over the years, adding adaptivity to an automated speaking assessment until now has been uncharted territory. The benefits of an adaptive assessment are more than worth the challenge of creating this assessment.

One benefit includes reducing administration time while increasing its quality. With adaptivity, a shorter testing experience can coincide with an increase in accuracy. Each question is scored immediately, and the system determines which question will be the most appropriate for the test-taker’s level. Each question is designed to provide the most evaluative information possible. This makes the overall process much more efficient, saving precious time and money for the organization.

Additionally, utilizing an adaptive assessment engine significantly reduces the possibility of cheating. Since the questions are completely dynamic, there is no way for the test-taker to anticipate and prepare for the questions in advance.

From the perspective of the test-taker, the user experience is also dramatically improved through adaptivity. In fixed-form assessments, test-takers are confronted with questions of a wide range of difficulty in order to collect enough data to pinpoint the test-taker’s ability level. Adaptivity provides the user experience similar to the Goldilocks fairy tale—not too difficult or too easy, but just right for their level. This experience leaves them feeling accomplished and confident that they represented their ability well.

“I founded Emmersion together with my cofounders with a very specific, lofty mission in mind: to close the global communication gap,” said Dr. Jacob Burdis, chief strategy officer and cofounder of Emmersion. “I believe that language is the key to connecting the world and breaking down communication barriers. Even before founding Emmersion, I have dedicated the majority of my education, research, and career to accomplishing this mission. Today, we are making huge strides toward realizing our vision of closing the global communication gap by introducing our fully-adaptive speaking assessment. Tomorrow, we will continue innovating and building toward a better, more affordable, and more scalable personalized language assessment and learning engine.”
