The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are 6.3 million unemployed people in the nation, along with 22 million people who identified as underemployed. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 28, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The continuing increase in the cost of fuel, the existing shortage of long-haul truck drivers, and the current supply-chain disruption might give one the idea that the outlook for the trucking industry is bleak. Not so, according to Brad Ball, President of Roadmaster Drivers School. "Trucking is a very resilient, recession-proof profession. Gone are the days of the lone wolf driver. Trucking now is a high-tech, high-paying profession that is attracting people from all walks of life," he says.
According to the American Trucking Associations, 72.5% of the nation's freight, by weight, is moved via trucks.(1) With the increase in e-commerce, there is a need for more truck drivers, especially long-haul drivers—currently estimated at 80,000 drivers.(2) According to Ball, there has been a resurgence of drivers of late. "There is no gender wage gap in trucking as drivers are paid by the mile. Trucking is an attractive solution to unemployment and under-employment. There are people with college degrees leaving the rat race to become truck drivers," says Ball.
To help with the shortage of drivers, Roadmaster recently acquired JTL Truck Driver Training in Omaha, Nebraska and is in the process of expanding the school to accommodate more students. Omaha is an important transportation hub for the Midwest.(3) In fact, it is home to a brand-new 700,000-sq. ft. Amazon fulfillment center; the first for the state of Nebraska.(4) Omaha is on the Missouri River, which moves approximately 5 million tons of freight a year(5) and also provides the city's designation as The Gateway to the West. Additionally, Interstates 80 and 29 extend the supply chain's reach from the Canadian border south to Kansas City and from Chicago west to California.
In Nebraska, according to indeed.com, the average salary for a truck driver is $70,066 (as of March 23, 2022), depending, of course, on factors like education, certifications, additional skills and the number of years of experience.
With over-the-road driving experience and classroom experience, drivers can quickly change their lives and careers and keep the chain of supplies for the country in motion. The course to become a licensed truck driver is 4 weeks long.
