Energetic Entrepreneur and Political Leader Joyce Verplank Hatton Releases Captivating Memoir ‘Breaking Glass – Broken Barriers: Voyage of an Entrepreneurial Spirit’
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (PRWEB) December 10, 2018 -- Author Joyce Verplank Hatton has had a lifelong passion for preschool education and care, experiences in entrepreneurial ventures, community and political leadership, worldwide adventures in sailing and skiing while also finding time for personal stories of love and family, as detailed in her exciting new memoir, “Breaking Glass – Broken Barriers: Voyage of an Entrepreneurial Spirit.”
Hatton provides readers with an intimate look into her journey in business and politics as a woman in the 20th Century and inspires a call to action during this important time of modern women’s movements. She encourages readers to value independent economic status, be entrepreneurial, pursue their ambitions, and take risks – as she has spent a lifetime doing.
With countless accomplishments, Hatton recognized the value of early childhood education and care. She developed her first nursery school in Western Michigan in 1957, the first child care company to go public in 1970, and the first multi-state computerized USDA child care food program in 1976. Hatton brought her leadership skills to state and national politics as well: she was a candidate for Michigan’s new State Board of Education in 1964, Republican County Chairman in President Gerald Ford’s Fifth District, and a delegate to the 1968 GOP National Convention.
Hatton also had a busy career in the broadcast media and communications field, leading the creation of the first FM radio station (KSPN-FM) in Aspen, Colo., in 1970 as well as the first UHF TV station in Albany, N.Y. (WXXA-Fox), and the first TV station in Aspen (TV 2) – both in 1982. She developed the first microwave system connecting Aspen to Glenwood Springs to Vail and across the Continental Divide to Denver’s United Cable in 1985, where TV 2 became “The Rocky Mountain Superchannel”.
In March of 1989, Hatton put together the first FDIC real estate auction in New York City with Christie’s and Cushman & Wakefield. They auctioned $50 million of FDIC assets and closed the deal in 90 minutes, marking the beginning of the huge wave of FDIC assets sold by auction in the 1990’s.
“Joyce Hatton has written an important memoir. At a time when women were beginning to challenge unwritten rules for their gender in business, politics and personal life, she was in the forefront. She was living the challenge. Her story is one of success and failures, of persistent commitment to her goals no matter what was happening to her.” – Arend D. Lubbers, President Emeritus, Grand Valley State University
“Joyce Verplank Hatton—known as “Blaze”, has and is living the good life, five exceptional children, educator, sailor, capitalist, many loves, a big heart, politician, gourmet, and adventurer. Get out of the way—the story goes on!! To be continued…” – John F. Gilmore, Founder of The Gilmore Collection
Hatton provides readers with an engrossing account of how she learned and grew from her own successes and failures, to inspire readers that it is never too late to take on a new challenge.

Jay Mead, President of Denver Public Library Commission, Founder of Jay Mead Communications, provided the following review of his longtime friend’s memoir:
“Joyce Verplank Hatton’s extensive account of her life as entrepreneur, local political leader, businesswoman, and mother is a story of energy and resourcefulness in overcoming the barriers confronting any ambitious woman in our world.
“Hatton’s family arrived in Michigan from Holland in the late 19th century, and themselves became successful entrepreneurs through hard work and ability to capitalize on the abundant opportunities available in the growing Midwest. This tradition informed Hatton’s life a century later, as she identified her own opportunities and approached them with an abiding faith that she was not limited by her gender but could compete on equal terms with other successful men and women.
“In the early days of childcare centers for newly working women, in television and radio broadcasting, in Republican party leadership, in fields as diverse as restaurant ownership, real estate, civic leadership, and sailing, Hatton built enterprises that experienced both success and failure—and learned key lessons from both. She continued to move forward, even in daunting circumstances, to advance important projects in her local and national community. Hatton was fortunate to have forged strong relationships with influential men and women who recognized her talent and assisted her in her efforts; Hatton knew how to build on this good will to help break the glass ceiling that held so many women of her day back.
“Hatton’s narrative is interesting and enjoyable to read and will be inspiring to young women and others who feel their own talents constricted by artificial barriers such as gender. A lifelong sailor, Joyce Verplank Hatton’s life is characterized by her voyage into the wind, under full sail and with the pleasure and excitement of discovery always ahead.”
