Environmental Fashion Activist Isabel Varela Hosts Zero-Waste Fashion Show with Veterans
New York, New York (PRWEB) December 01, 2016 -- Environmental fashion activist Isabel Varela strives to give new meaning to sustainable eco wear by unveiling a capsule collection using only upcycled fabrics worn by veterans and influential women during a zero-waste fashion event on December 9th, 2016 at the Farm Soho.
With the support of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, Up Mountain Switchel and Brooklyn-based weaving studio The Weaving hand–Varela’s mission is to shed light around the unethical practices in the fashion industry, unrealistic beauty standards and the harmful impact fast-fashion has on the environment by hosting an entirely eco-friendly fashion event with veterans and influential women as models.
“Real recognizes real. Up Mountain Switchel has attracted good and genuine people. When someone like Isabel, who is doing positive things coming from an authentic place, takes initiative to work with us, we recognize it and do what we can to build together,” states Up Mountain Switchel Founder Ely Key
Tailor turned designer Isabel Varela, creator of eco wear line, IzavelVarela. The label is known for its transparent manufacturing, use of organic fabrics and belief in upcycling. The brand’s mission is to revolutionize sustainable fashion and celebrate the diverse voices of fashion.
The event will be hosted at the Farm Soho in New York, and will feature two influential women and four veteran models as the positive voices for fashion, representing those who’ve served our country. The sustainable fashion show will showcase all different body types, sizes and shapes that all women naturally come in.
“I've always been told I could never do runway because of my size. So to have an opportunity to make an impression for petite models in the modeling industry means the world to me,” says Veteran Model Atlanta Gates.
The zero-waste event will encourage guests to donate clothes to upcycle, swap and recycle. The guests will have the opportunity to donate their clothes to the homeless, upcycle and recycle fabrics to be produced into a new garment, or swap their clothes with one another.
“Becoming a part of this event is a way for me to help get the message out that sustainable options exist for just about everything we need to live comfortably,” says Army Reserve Veteran Rui Li.
The brand has successfully raised all money from the event from a GoFundMe campaign. To show her appreciation, Varela will be auctioning off an eco-friendly garment piece, donating all proceeds to a charity.
“We do not have to hide behind our clothes, they do not wear us. We wear the clothes. It's important for each person to build their self belief and self love,” says Varela.
