Episcopal Relief & Development and the Episcopal Church of Cuba partner to support the people most in need after Cuba's power grid crash.
NEW YORK, Jan. 30, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Episcopal Relief & Development is working with the Episcopal Church of Cuba to respond to Hurricane Rafael, a powerful hurricane that devastated the northwestern side of the island in November.
When Hurricane Rafael made landfall it created deadly flash flood and mudslide conditions, and about 220,000 people were evacuated from the impacted area. The storm also knocked out the island's fragile power grid, affecting 10 million people. Rafael occurred just weeks after Hurricane Oscar, an earthquake and a national power grid failure.
The compounding events have led to an inconsistent power supply for people most in need. Episcopal Relief & Development is partnering with the Episcopal Church of Cuba to provide solar-powered fans, lamps, USB ports, flashlights, cell phones and radios to help families and individuals.
"Those most affected by this storm are people experiencing homelessness, older adults and people living with disabilities," said Margaret Ruiz, Program Officer, Episcopal Relief & Development. "We are working with the church to help people rebuild their lives and recover from this financial and emotional setback."
Please pray for the people affected by hurricanes Oscar and Rafael, the power outages and the earthquake in Cuba. Support to the International Disaster Response Fund will help communities throughout Cuba, and around the world, to recover from disasters.
