SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Eskaton, a nonprofit organization serving seniors for 50 years, will host fall prevention workshops between September 5-27 in honor of National Fall Prevention and Awareness Day and Week. The free workshops will take place at various senior communities, churches and recreation centers, with over 20 different events to choose from.
"Falls are the leading cause of injury, hospital admissions and deaths among older adults," said Dr. Teri Tift, Executive Director of Quality & Compliance for Eskaton. "Even though one in three people over the age of 65 fall each year, falling is not a normal part of aging."
By paying close attention to one's diet and medication, as well as staying active and keeping one's home clear of trip hazards, seniors have the ability to reduce their own fall risk. All of the events throughout September are part of a national movement to reduce injuries related to falls. National Fall Prevention and Awareness Day recognized by the National Council on Aging is September 22. In order to impact the health and economic burden of falls, the CDC published tools for senior care providers and physicians to use to assess fall risk. In California, fall prevention coalitions, health care providers and senior service agencies will hold events around the state for Fall Prevention Awareness Week, September 22-28, 2018.
"Although we work on fall prevention all year long, now is the perfect time of year to partner with other organizations and get the word out to the public," explained Dr. Tift.
