Everyone Has a Chair. That Thing You Are Bound to or Unwillingly Defines You
when i grow up i want TO BE A CHAIR is a newly released coming-of-age memoir from the unique and inspirational perspective of a paraplegic woman. From where she sat, her view of the world was both quite ordinary and rivetingly extraordinary--from a paralyzing car accident in her teens to traveling overseas on a journey of self-reflection to becoming a mom.
DENVER, Feb. 21, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Ryan Rae Harbuck sustained a spinal cord injury from a well-publicized car accident in 1997 when she was only sixteen years old. The accident left her paralyzed from the chest down, killed two, and injured the rest—everyone's life changed instantly at that moment. Realizing that she could either continue on or perish completely, Ryan made the best of her every day. She became a swim coach and a teacher. She journeyed across the globe to seek experimental stem cell treatment. She swam for Paralympics. She became a mom despite her disability. Along the way, she was keen to learn and reflect upon her new perspective of the world, rendering stories with a universal appeal for all readers. But all she wanted was to be a chair.
Or did she?
"Ryan proves what's possible when we allow our vulnerability to take us beyond simply just living and into a vibrant and fulfilling life. This book is so real and raw that it'll inspire you to transform whatever your version of a chair is—and fly." --Amy B. Scher, bestselling author of This Is How I Save My Life
"Ryan both thinks and feels deeply and allows her audience to take the journey with her, giving readers permission to reach into the depths of their own experiences and fears, encouraging personal growth from the deepest level of the soul. After reading when i grow up i want TO BE A CHAIR, you will feel both tested and triumphant, while at the same time ready to reveal your own victorious and personal best."
–Tricia Downing,
author and 2016 Paralympian

A Colorado native, Ryan has always found solace in the mountain air and has always been up for an outdoor challenge—as far as her wheelchair wheels could take her, or beyond. She has been a teacher and a swim coach but enjoys being Mom the most. She and her husband, Andrew live in Denver with their two mudslinging, car-vrooming young boys. Her memoir is her first published book. Recently, she has written about her experience as a pregnant paraplegic published by the Huffington Post in January 2022.
