New Neural Network Model achieves a 1-in-125,000,000 False Accept Rate
SUMMERLIN, Nev., May 3, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- FaceTec, the global leader in 3D face biometrics software, announced today it has released its best performing 1:1 face matching algorithm ever, by a wide margin.
A face authentication system comprises two parts: human Liveness Detection and 1:1 Face matching. Its security is the result of both its ability to determine if the user is alive and physically present, and to accurately match the user's face to previously stored biometric data. The more accurate these two aspects of the system are, the more secure it becomes, and the more confidence can be placed in the AI's decision that the correct user has been authenticated.
To achieve the highest level of certainty and security, today's state-of-the-art face matching algorithms, like Apple's Face ID and FaceTec, use 3D data. However, today, both technologies are beyond NIST's testing scope, which is limited to 2D data because their legacy face matching algorithm protocols were instituted in 1994.
The NIST Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT) results are posted on an online Leaderboard and ranked by false non-match rate (FNMR) across different datasets. However, these results have become irrelevant in 1:1 Face Matching because they can only measure the performance of 2D matchers. The FRVT continues to reject that as a modality for user verification 2D Face Matching is not sufficiently accurate, and hasn't been state-of-the-art for over five years.

FaceTec's 3D FaceMap™ Test Dataset is "most similar" to NIST's Mugshot 2D Test Dataset, and the results are compared in detail in FaceTec's recently updated 3D Face Matching Accuracy Report.
FaceTec has searched for many years to find a lab capable of performing large-scale, third-party testing of its software. That organization has been found and will perform real-world N:N testing on FaceTec's latest 3D face matching algorithm. A.C.C.S. Ltd. is a UKAS-accredited assessment body composed of auditors, certification specialists, and data protection experts. The group independently tests and certifies online and offline systems that check age and identity, such as passport scanners, biometrics, and age verification software, and have been contracted to perform a large-scale public test of FaceTec's 3D:3D Matching in an N:N context.
