Federal Criminal Defense Attorney Allen Sawyer Secured to Defend Man Charged in Pennsylvania Drug Trafficking Case

According to the August 24, 2021 indictment returned by the grand jury in the Western District of Pennsylvania (Case# 2:21-cr-00355-CCW), Juan Villagran, 23, of Stockton, CA, was charged with conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, 500 grams of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine, 500 grams or more of a mixture amount of cocaine, and a quantity of a mixture and substance containing marijuana from July 2020 through August 2021. Thirty-six other defendants, including two other California men, were named in the indictment that describes the case as resulting from a 13-month DEA investigation of a drug-trafficking organization operating in a pipeline from California to Pennsylvania and involving the distribution of more than 150 kg of methamphetamine.

According to the indictment, following Villagran's arrest on or about August 31 and his initial appearance in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California on September 1, Villagran was ordered at his detention hearing on September 7 to be released on bond by United States Magistrate Judge Allison Claire (Eastern District of California), who denied the government's request that Villagran be detained pending trial and transported to the Western District of Pennsylvania in the custody of the United States Marshals. On September 8, Acting U.S. Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman filed an emergency motion for a stay and revocation of release order with the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Pennsylvania. According to the motion, which described Villagran as a flight risk and danger to the community, the government requested that the court revoke or stay the release order entered by Magistrate Judge Claire and instead order his transport by U.S. marshals to the Western District of Pennsylvania for further proceedings. United States District Judge Christy Criswell Wiegan of the Western District of Pennsylvania granted the motion. In the September 8 order, U.S. District Judge Wiegan ordered that Magistrate Judge Claire's order be stayed and that Villagran be transported by U.S. marshals to the Western District of Pennsylvania to be detained pending trial.
