Fictional Police State Terrorizes Citizens Who Break the Rules in New Book, Nanny Gone Rogue
Rape, terrorism, and religious persecution combine in this searing novel about a desperate nanny who escapes poverty in her own country, only to fall prey to government oppression.
NEW YORK, March 9, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Rape, terrorism, and religious persecution combine in this searing novel about a desperate nanny who escapes poverty in her own country, only to fall prey to government oppression in the fictional police state of "Syriana."
Sylvia is a maid from the Philippines whose family is left destitute when her father dies. She moves to Syriana for work, becoming a nanny for a family with its own share of troubles. The father commits adultery and is stoned to death, as determined by the local religion of "Shalila."
Sylvia ponders to herself and says, "Laila was raped, beaten and abused. May the Lord excuse my silence, my timidity, and my delayed protection of her innocence, but let my portrayal of her ordeal serve to lessen the burden of guilt, which I have carried long enough. I was her nanny. I suffered with her – and perhaps more – for unlike this little girl, I knew I could save her and there could be a way to end her ordeal. Why did it take me so long to take her to safety? This remains an obstacle to my peace of mind. It is a reminder that we all sometimes succumb to the devil when it is in our interests to keep silent."
