ATLANTA, Oct. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Community leader Jodi Merriday, candidate for the Atlanta City Council Post 3 At-Large seat, announces key endorsements heading into the final weeks before the Nov. 2 election.
In her first run for public office, Merriday has secured endorsements from the Committee for a New Georgia, Georgia Working Families Party, the Atlanta REALTORS® Political Action Committee (ARPAC), The Black Slate, a "Well-Qualified" rating from Committee for a Better Atlanta, and an "A" from Beltline RailNOW.
"The Candidate Screening Committee was very impressed with your knowledge of the issues. Your passion for Atlanta was evident in your interview and your responses regarding the City's most critical challenges," wrote Frankie Callen Elliott, Governmental Affairs Director for the Atlanta REALTORS Association, in the organization's endorsement notice. "We all look forward to working with you to ensure your success in November."
In addition, Merriday has again outraised her closest opponent and reported raising more than $200,000 in her Sept. 30 disclosure with 64 percent more cash on hand. More than 600 individual donors have contributed to her campaign since she announced in May 2021.
"I am proud to have been endorsed by so many prominent organizations as I finish this sprint into November," Merriday said. "And it has been incredible to experience the supportive base of individual donors who believe in the vision of our campaign to promote public safety and criminal justice reform, strengthen schools, revitalize business, improve roads and transit, and fund affordable housing in my native Atlanta."
Merriday, a public and higher education professional, corporate diversity trainer, and former Ombudsmen for Atlanta Public Schools, launched her citywide candidacy with public safety as her primary focus. Merriday says that when elected, she will support:
- hiring more public safety responders;
- ensuring that APD has a state of the art public safety training facility;
- funding de-escalation training for APD officers following President Obama's guidelines for 21st Century Policing;
- instituting retention bonuses for police officers;
- establishing partnerships with Atlanta Youth Promise Centers; and
- robustly funding the PAD (Policing Alternative & Diversion Division) for 24-hrs of service.
Merriday – who earned her Master's degree from the London School of Economics and her Ph.D. from Temple University – has 30 years of experience in higher and public education and the private sector. She resolved 1,600 incidents of escalated community concerns following APS's cheating scandal as Ombudsman and currently works as a diversity, equity and inclusion subject matter expert, content creator, and trainer. Merriday seeks to bring these experiences and skills as a social justice ambassador, facilitator, and strategic thinker to Atlanta City Council to make Atlanta one of the best places in America to live.
